Protect Your Floor During Remodeling Whenever you are remodeling, it's important to protect any un-carpeted floors from demolition debris and dropped tools. When canvas drop cloths aren't enough, I use 4 x 8 ft sheets of 1/8-in tempered hardboard, commonly called Masonite. Start by thoroughly vacuuming the floor so grit doesn't scratch the flooring under the hardwood. Then cut and lay down the hardboard and duct-tape the pieces together at the seams. If you'll be running the HVAC system during the remodel, be sure you don't cover grilles or registers. Finally, seal around the perimeter with masking tape so grit cant get underneath the hardboard at the edges. A sheet of 1/8-in hardboard cost about $5 at home center. Gary Wentz

Lock the Overhead Garage Door When some people go on vacation, they "lock" their overhead garage door by unplugging the opener. That's a good idea, but physically locking the door is even better. An unplugged opener won't stop a burglar who has entered through the house from opening the garage door from the inside, backing in a van and using your garage as a loading dock. make a burglar's job more difficult by locking the door itself. If your door doesn't have a lockable latch, drill a hole in the track just above one of the rollers and slip in a padlock. Contact us

Soak stains with baking soda Mix baking soda with just enough water to form a thick paste. Apply the paste to the stain and lay a wet paper towel over the paste to keep it moist. Stubborn stains on countertops can be frustrating, but they don't have to be permanent. Standard household spray cleaners will remove most of them. Check the label and make sure any product you use is recommended for laminate countertops. The secret to success with these products is patience; let the cleaner work for five minutes or so before you wipe off the countertop. A plastic brush is helpful on stubborn spots. If a standard cleaner won't do the job, try baking soda. Paste made from baking soda and a little water often removes stains left by fruit juices and other liquids.
